We took a little trip to Timoleague, about a 1/2 hour west of Ballinspittle, on Thursday evening (Aug. 16th - the day I would have been coming home if my stay wasn't extended!) The rain stopped, and the sun shone for the couple of hours we were there. I fell in love with this tiny part of Ireland - I drove by it again last night, and I think it is so beautiful. (I know, I know...I use that word a lot while talking about Ireland, but I can't come up with another word for it!) While Olwyn and the boys hung out at the playground, Rhia and I decided to explore Timoleague Abbey. Timoleague Abbey was founded in 1240 A.D., and was in use on and off until 1629. It was attacked by the English in 1612, and all the stained glass windows were lost. But much of the significant architecture remains. It was very peaceful and quiet as Rhia and I walked around inside the abbey, and I found myself humming "The hills are alive with the sound of music" to myself - I really did feel like I'd stepped into The Sound of Music, and that I'd being hearing the gates clanging in the graveyard any minute as the Nazi soldiers came searching for us! A little bit eery!
This is NOT a pictue I took. = ) I have yet to see the abbey all lit up night - This is a picture by Mike Brown Photography, a local Irish photographer. I just wanted you all to see the "whole picture"!
Walking towards the abbey, along the ocean
Another view of the outside of the abbey
Is this a happy girl, or what?!?
View of from the backside of the abbey
View of the tower
You can see the cross of a gravestone through an outside window
Inside the abbey (as are the rest of these pictures)

I think beautiful is a great way to describe it! Missed you at Milltown my friend!
Beautiful pictures - and a bit eery - I can really see why you made the connection to that scene in the Sound of Music.
Rhia is really growing up, too. I can't believe how much she has changed since you first got there!
Love ya,
Mom
